Ball Python
One of the most commonly owned snakes in the pet industry the ball python is native to Africa. They are the smallest of the African pythons and normally grow to between 3 and 4 feet long but can reach up to 6 feet long. Their scales are smooth and their coloring is usually black with light green-brown markings down the length of the body with a white or cream underbelly. Ball Pythons in captivity have been bred to have many other variations in color and pattern. They prefer grasslands and lightly wooded areas to live in and get their name from the way they coil into a ball when threatened. These snakes lay eggs that are incubated by the female usually in a burrow. They can live between 20 and 40 years of age. They feed on small mammals and sometimes birds when they can catch them, requiring the whole animal to stay healthy. Our python Chubbs likes to lounge in the sun, bathe in her water bowl and lurk in her heated cave.
