Ferret
Thank you for your interest in adopting a ferret, however, Thurgood has been adopted for the 2008 season. Check back early next year if you would like to adopt him for the next season or chose from one of our other animals who would love to be adopted!
Domestic ferrets are believed to have been in existance for as long as 2500 years. They weigh between 2-4 pounds, live between 7-10 years and come in a variety of colors. Their origins are mysterious but they may be descended from European or Steppe Polecats. In the past, ferrets were used for hunting but now are mostly pets. This member of the weasel family is energetic and playful. They like to play chase and have mock battles as you can see from our ferret Thurgood's expression.
Ferrets are most active during the night, love to play hide-and-seek(often with their owners car keys) and can fit into very tiny spaces so should always be watched closely when allowed to roam freely. Because they are members of the family mustedilae they have scent glands that release a strong odor irresistable to other ferrets but not so pleasant for humans. This scent is present even when the ferret has had the scent glands removed so this is another consideration if you are thinking about having a ferret as a companion. Ferrets are carnivorous mammals. In the wild, they eat small animals whole. There are commericial ferret foods available but caution should be used to insure the feed is high in protein and fat with only a little carbohydrates. Though they may like things like peanut butter or raisins these should never be fed as it can lead to severe health problems.
