Capuchin Monkey
The Capuchin Monkey exists in the wild from Honduras in Central America to Brazil, Peru and Paraguay in South America. They are named for their color which resembles the cowl worn by Franciscan monks. They are between 12 to 22 inches long and weigh almost 3 pounds. They are very intelligent and can be taught to perform quite complex tasks. This can be a problem, however, when a captive monkey is kept in too small a space and/or not given proper entertainment, leading to physical and even mental illness. With proper environmental enhancement and food a Capuchin can reach up to 45 years of age in captivity though their lifespan in the wild is only 15 to 25 years. The diet of the capuchins is more varied than other monkeys. They are omnivores, eating not only fruits, nuts, seeds and buds, but also insects, spiders, bird eggs and small animals.
