Rabbit

Thank you for your interest in adopting our rabbit, however, Bandit has been adopted for the 2008 season. Check back early next year if you would like to adopt him next season or pick one of our other animals who would love to be adopted!

The domestic rabbit is descended from the European rabbit and has been raised in captivity since Roman times. In the past, they were used primarily as a food source and their meat is leaner than pork, beef or even chicken. Their fur is also widely used. They are mammals in the family leporidae. Though the European rabbit is widespread and though some types of rabbits have become nuisance animals in places like Australia and New Zeland many of the worlds rabbit populations are highly endangered. The European rabbit began to be bred selectively in the Middle Ages and many different breeds have been developed since then including our Lionhead rabbit Bandit. Rabbits can become great pets if handled correctly. They can learn their names and even simple commands though this takes a great deal of training. They must be handled with care however. Because they are prey animals they are not recommended for very small children as young children may move too quickly and loudly for a rabbit to feel safe. A frightened rabbit which cannot run away will defend itself by both scratching and biting. Like dogs, rabbits come in many sizes, and can live from between 4 to 20 years depending on type and lifestyle. Our rabbit Bandit likes to live it up here at the park eating a mixture of oat and alfalfa grass and lots of fresh fruits and vegetables like apples and carrots.
